Glossary
Every term on the boards, in plain English. For how the numbers are calculated, see the Methodology.
- Hit rate
- How often a player has gone over a posted line, as a share of the games that count. 7 of 10 is 70%. A game where the stat was not recorded is left out, never counted as a zero.
- L5, L10, Season
- The hit rate over the player's last 5 games, last 10 games, and this season. The number after "of" is how many games the rate is based on; a small sample means less.
- Line
- The number a sportsbook or prediction market posts for a stat, such as 64.5 receiving yards. Over means the player finishes above it, Under means below.
- Main line and alt line
- The main line is the book's standard number for a stat, the one priced closest to even odds. Alt lines are the other numbers on the same stat, usually priced to be more or less likely.
- O/U (over/under)
- The two sides of a line. In Game Lines, the total is the over/under on the combined score of both teams.
- Moneyline
- A bet on which team wins the game outright, with no point spread.
- Spread
- The number of points a team must win or lose by for a bet on it to win. -3.5 means the team must win by 4 or more.
- Total
- The over/under on the combined points scored by both teams in a game.
- American odds
- The price format used on the site. A minus number such as -110 is how much you stake to win 100; a plus number such as +150 is how much you win on a 100 stake.
- Implied probability
- The chance a price suggests. -110 implies about 52%, +150 implies 40%. Prediction-market prices are already probabilities and are converted to American odds on the site.
- Prediction market
- An exchange such as Kalshi or Polymarket where people trade yes/no contracts. A contract's price is the market's probability for that outcome.
- Defense vs position
- How many points, rebounds or other stats a team's defense allows to players at one position (guards, forwards, centers) compared with the rest of the league.
- Head-to-head
- How a player has done in past games against the team they play next. A player usually meets a given team about once a season, so these samples are small.
- Sample size
- The number of games a rate is based on. A 100% hit rate over 3 games says much less than 70% over 10.
- Pick'em
- A fantasy-style product where you choose over or under on a player's stat line. ArchivePicks shows Underdog's Pick'em lines.
- PPR, half-PPR, standard
- Fantasy scoring formats. PPR gives a point per reception, half-PPR gives half a point, and standard gives none.
- Value tier
- A group of fantasy players of similar worth at a position, built from recorded season stats on the Fantasy board.
